If I want to sell my handmade products, I need to list them and get them in front of the right eyes. That means good product photography—and sometimes filming my products for preview clips.
For that, I wanted to start using my YouTube channel.
Only when I tried it today… Filming handmade products went all wrong.
👉 What Actually Went Wrong
What you don’t get to see is the struggle I had just trying to set up my webcam for filming handmade products. No matter where I put my laptop, something was off—wrong angle, too much light, not enough light… you name it. (I’d say this is part of the sweat equity I have been talking about in a previous post!)
When I finally found a spot that was at least somewhat acceptable for filming my newest handmade jewelry creations, the lighting gremlins—and my butter fingers—decided they needed to bedevil me.
As I’m trying to proudly show off my handmade off-loom beaded pendants, earrings, and rings, the colors just aren’t showing up right. In real life, they’re strong and brilliant, but on camera, they look dull and muted.
And of course, to top it all off, my fingers turned into complete butter fingers, and I dropped one of the pendants.
A professional product model I am not… haha.
👉 Why I Chose to Share It Anyway
Truth be told, my first instinct was to just scrap the whole clip. You can even see at the end how my frustration gets the best of me—I basically end with an abrupt “never mind.”
I wasn’t just frustrated… I was mildly disgusted with my lack of prowess in filming handmade products.
But as I closed the camera app, a thought struck me.
I want to keep things real. I want to show the behind-the-scenes of building my handmade products business. And honestly, what better way to do that than by sharing the flawed attempts, the oopsies, and the real-life struggles?
I’ve never claimed to be good at filming or product photography—yet.
And “yet” is the key word here.
I’m learning. I’m practicing. I’m messing up… and then trying again.
So feel free to laugh, chuckle, yell at the screen, or call me a klutz when I drop the pendant—those are all perfectly acceptable reactions.
I’ve decided I’m going to share more of these behind-the-scenes oopsies as they happen. And if you’d like to come along for that ride, make sure to like the clip and subscribe to my YouTube channel.
…and now, without further ado—enjoy my handmade product filming “disaster.”
What About You?
Well… that was my adventure in filming handmade products 😅
Not exactly smooth, not exactly polished—but very real.
And honestly? That’s what this journey is going to look like for a while. Learning, trying, messing up, adjusting… and trying again.
So now I’m curious—
Have you ever had something that should have been simple turn into a complete mess?
Or if you’re a creator yourself, what’s something that went completely sideways for you?
Let me know in the comments—I’d love to hear your stories (and know I’m not the only one having these moments!).
And if you want to follow along as I build my handmade business—oopsies, wins, and everything in between—you can also subscribe to my YouTube channel and join me on this journey.
Until next time….
